"the book is fantasy. It’d be categorized in the store as Adult Fantasy. It’s heroine driven. Inspired by Irish mythology. It's a quest/self discovery type of story that also includes a romantic/sensual storyline. The book is not YA or Happily Ever After romance. So they’d have to like the fantasy genre, adult fiction, and be okay with the sexual content. (It is NOT erotica), but there are a couple sex scenes."

Review~ Sweetest Taboo by Eva Marquez + Giveaway

with 19 comments

Sweetest Taboo
by Eva Marquez

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Isabel Cruz was fifteen years old when she met Tom Stevens. She was 15 when they started dating, and 16 when she lost her virginity to him. By the time she turned 18 and went to college, everything had fallen apart. This hadn’t been an ordinary love, though. Not a love between two dear friends, or even high school sweethearts. This had been the most taboo sort of love there was: a relationship between a student and her teacher. Isabel started her high school career as a normal student, but set her sights on Tom Stevens as soon as she met him, and pursued him with an intense – and sometimes reckless – fascination. When he finally approached her after swim practice and told her that he shared her feelings, it was the start of a forbidden and dangerous relationship.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

From Chapter 1:

“Tom?” I asked in a hoarse whisper, my stomach full of butterflies. It was still a little strange to call him by first name, even after all these years. Especially when everyone else at Royal Oaks High called him “Mr. Stevens.”

“Isabel,” came the familiar voice. “How are you?” His voice was gentle and deep. It soothed me instantly, the same way it had when I was fifteen. There was an edge to his voice tonight, though, and I sensed that there was something bothering him.

"Is something wrong?" I asked. I didn’t want to admit that I already knew exactly what it was; my high school graduation was coming up. It would bring an end to our current arrangement. We hadn’t talked about our future yet, but I had known that it was coming.

After a few pensive moments, Tom spoke.

“You’re my sweetheart," he told me, his voice sad. "I can’t imagine life without you. I don’t want to have to imagine life without you.”

Tom rarely used terms of endearment with me, these days. When he did – in these rare moments when he called me his sweetheart – my heart melted. All of the turmoil, the sleepless nights, the protracted nature of our relationship, became nothing more than a passing inconvenience and very worthwhile. Tonight, though, I knew that the word came with drawbacks. They gave me the courage I needed to say the words I’d been dreading.

“My graduation won’t affect our relationship, you know that," I told him. "Look at how much we’ve been through together. If we made it through all of that, we can make it through anything. Tom, I want to be with you always, no matter where life takes me after graduation.”

I spoke passionately, fully believing in what I said. I was absolutely devoted to this man. But somewhere deep inside, I knew I was being dishonest. Neither of us wanted our relationship to change, but it was clear that things were going to change, and soon. I had just been offered a place at a small, private liberal arts college on the East Coast. The choice had been difficult because although I wanted to stay close to Tom, I also wanted to move forward with my life. In the end, I accepted the offer. Tom hadn’t really reacted when I told him. It hadn’t affected our relationship. Now, though, the cracks were starting to show.

 “I want to believe that,” Tom answered quietly. “I loved the last letter you wrote me. Every time I read your letters, I feel like I’m sixteen again. I feel like I’ve come out of a deep sleep." A pause, and then, "I can’t lose you, Isabel. You’re the reason I wake up in the morning; I can’t love anyone more than I love–”

Suddenly I heard a distinct click on the line. My heart plummeted.

“Did you hear that?" Tom snapped, his tone suddenly terse. "Did someone pick up the phone at your house?”

 “Hold on a minute, let me check inside.” I slipped back inside and listened, but the house was completely quiet. The kitchen phone was on the counter, my mom’s office was dark, and I was holding the only other phone in the house.

"Who picked up the phone?” Tom repeated, worry coloring his voice.

The click had not originated on my end of the line. I should've been relieved, but my panic rose even more.

“Tom," I whispered into the receiver. "It wasn’t here, everyone’s asleep..."

“I have to go," Tom interrupted abruptly. "Danielle's coming.”

There was another click, and the line went dead.

My Review~
I fell head over heals with this forbidden romance. For some the idea of a student teacher relationship may sound repulsive but Eva wrote such a wonderful story that it was hard to detach yourself and say hey wait a minute I know this is illegal but the love story was so brilliant.

Of the few things I didn't enjoy in the story were slight things in the characters themselves. Tom was always such a double standard. Always very possessive and jealous with Isabel but at the same timehe was the one with the wife and kids at home. What bothered me about Isabel was that she told so many people the secret. Why? If you know that he could get arrested and possibly the whole town would find out why would you tell your friends?

Even though this is probably not the most liked topic I loved this book. there is something about forbidden relationships that we love whether the danger or curiousity. I highly enjoyed this book and recommend it not everyone would per say want to pick it up but it is worth it if you do!

Eva will award a Kindle touch to one randomly drawn commenter during the tour, and a swag pack of goodies to one commenter at each stop.

Review~ Daughter of Smoke and Bone

with 6 comments

Review~ Daughter of Smoke and Bone

Book Description~

Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages--not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.

When one of the strangers--beautiful, haunted Akiva--fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself? AMAZON
Rating ~ 5/6 Squares

Cover~
I love this cover though I don't think it has a whole lot to do with the story itself  other than the masquerade ball later in the novel but I genuinely think it is beautiful! I myself have the UK cover which is below next to the US cover and I think it isn't as "pretty" but features  a very large plot element to the story!

My Review~
I loved this book! It was a crazy roller coaster and I was absolutely in love with it! This novel is a really refreshing and hauntingly beautiful fantasy genre story. The beginning left the reader with many questions which was why it took me awhile to get into it! It wasn't that the world building wasn't something that I disliked but it just sounds so unbelievable, after several chapters I found myself really connecting to the main character Karou. The creativity of this story still amazes me. From the setting in Prague to the chimera's, to the history behind them, and the love story. I enjoyed Karou as a character so much because she wasn't afraid to stand up for herself and do what she felt was right. She was definitely bad ass!

The major thing that I didn't enjoy was the Madrigal back story with Akiva. Not that I didn't enjoy it in particular just that it felt like two completely different stories. I liked the growth it showed of Akiva and especially the the mythology and how it was foreshadowed with the baby teeth thing. But you fell in love with Karou and then all of a sudden you're in this new story and you get lost at times. Other than that I have to say this book was fantastic. I can't wait for the sequel which should be coming out soon!

Check out the sequel!

I stared at Joshua through those bitter tears, my heart missing beats as I tried to remember to breathe. I finally knew what the glow meant. I was a freak and Joshua was going to die." BIO:
I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognize that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practice given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes… I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It’s a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each other's loves – it works wonderfully…
My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands – I shall forever remain cross-eyed.

My Review~
I don't think that I have ever read a book about Valkyries before. I really didn't know much bout the mythology either so I really wanted to read Dead Radiance for that reason. It always freaks me out when characters have an ability in which they know when someone will die. It was crazy to see the impact that had on Bryn. Even though this book in particular is about Valkyries  it is a version of those stories where the main character realizes they aren't fully human and it is their road to self discovery! I enjoy stories like that and if you do I think you will enjoy Dead Radiance as well!

My Review~
I think this is my favorite of the novella series so far! I really enjoyed the new characters. I think the plot of this one was much more evolved than the others. Werewolves, witches, demons, and the good old vampires we all love what isn't there to like. I really enjoyed Tawny and David's relationship the most! When she was taking care of him it was so cute probably my favorite part of the series.
I really love the progression of the novellas it seems like every novel we learn about something new in this world. Which is used to add on to the next in the series after how much I enjoyed this one I am excited to read the next one! It better live up to this one!

Review~ Wisteria by Bisi Leyton + Giveaway

with 14 comments

Wisteria
by Bisi Leyton

BLURB:

Sixteen year old Wisteria Kuti has two options—track the infected around the Isle of Smythe or leave the only known safe haven and face a world infested with flesh eating biters. But even with well-armed trackers, things go wrong and Wisteria ends up alone facing certain death, until she is rescued by the mysterious Bach. Uninfected, Bach is able to survive among the hordes of living dead.

Eighteen year old Bach, from a race known as The Family, has no interest in human affairs. He was sent here to complete his Great Walk and return home as a man—as a Sen Son. The Family regard humans as Dirt People, but Bach is drawn to this Terran girl, whom he has never seen before, but somehow knows.

Hunted by flesh eaters, cannibals, and the mysterious blood thirsty group called Red Phoenix, Wisteria and Bach make their way back to the Isle of Smythe, a community built on secrets and lies.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt
Thirteen months after the first official case of Nero Disease
“Wisteria, run!” Rebecca O’Leary screamed over the radio.
Wisteria Kuti whipped around and came face-to-face with the blood-red eyes of a hungry flesh-eating biter. The biter was a man, infected by Nero Disease, who had long lost his mind. He looked more animal than human and he wanted one thing—to feed on the flesh of uninfected people. The biter growled and staggered toward Wisteria.
She fled down the deserted road to the nearest house. The front door was locked. She kicked at the door, but it didn’t open. Taking out her handgun, she smashed through the window of the door.
“Ugh,” more biters growled behind her.
She spun around, fired once, and hit one in the head. She unlocked the door by reaching in and turning the lock. Once inside, she chained and bolted the door.
Crash—a biter smashed through another window into the house.
Wisteria’s heart jumped and she darted up the stairs as fast as she could.
“Get out of the house, Wisteria!” Rebecca radioed.
I’m trying.
A biter grabbed her ankle as she ran. Falling hard on the steps, she wailed in pain. “Ah.” No time to cry, Wisteria. She fired at the biter holding her. One bullet left.
Three more biters appeared below and started coming up the stairs. Leaping up, she sprinted to the top floor and dashed into the first open doorway that led to the master bedroom. Locking the door, she headed straight for the window.
The infected clawed at the door, tearing it apart and snarling as they entered
My Review~
Wisteria is an awesome zombie novel. I enjoyed the refreshing take on something that has been done so many times. The world building was phenomenal. A highly developed story that made the story come alive. I enjoyed the cool use of language in this story. It was different and I enjoyed the creativeness about that. It wasn't just another zombie book it was more than that and it set it apart! Also loved the name Wisteria such an awesome name!
I really enjoyed this story and comes at a perfect time with Halloween coming up soon!
Review~ The Acropolis by R.K Ryals + Giveaway
Review~  The Acropolis by R.K Ryals + Giveaway
"We have a new assignment for you, Mr. Reinhardt."
These words are not comforting to me. At eighteen, I am a gargoyle who has been demoted because I broke the rules. Now I have a new mission, a new mark to protect. But I don't expect Emma Chase. I don't expect to question my own race. I don't expect to care for my own mark. And I am not prepared for what I find at The Acropolis.
About this author
I am a Native Mississippian who started writing in elementary school. I was a reserved child who threw away almost everything I wrote. Later, when I was older, I discovered the crumpled pieces of my work in a box in my mother's hope chest. When I asked her why she saved the work, she replied,
"What you considered trash, I considered genius."
It has been my motto ever since. My mother passed in 2005. She is missed.
I am the scatterbrained (no lie) mother of three, and I live in Mississippi with my husband and three divalicious daughters and a female shitszu (also a diva)named Tinkerbell. My poor husband!
Redemption is a three book series following young, brash Dayton Blainey. The first two books are now available on Amazon.com for kindle and in print.
My Review
Cover-
The cover represents the story extremely well and think it is a great portrayl of the story!
The originality of the Arcopolis is truly amazing. Reading a book based on a gargolye race is quite odd but at the same time very intriguing and you get swept right away into this crazy world that R.K Ryals has built. Plot wise this story was excellent and my favorite part being Emma and her part to this story. It was such a strange introduction of her that I really liked right away.
I do wish that the world building in the beginning happened a little more clear cut. There many parts to this story that confused me as a reader. The writing though was very great. I loved the slight humor used for certain characters. I recommend this story to you guys, especially if you are looking for something very different.
My Review~
Amber Garza has done it once again. She ended this amazing series off great. Now that this is the third and final installment of this series I truly don't want to spoil this series. I would say that if the blurb for this book intriguied you check out the first book Prowl. They will definitely not let you down in the slightest. I feel like for the past two and now this review.
